Heating, Ventilation & Lighting
Efficient heating, air quality & lighting of your home
Once your thermal envelope is performing, now is the time to focus on Heating, air quality and lighting
HEATING
Heat pumps are one of the most efficient heating systems for New Zealand’s typical energy-efficient heating. These can be installed as single units in individual rooms, or for improved performance, install ducted multi-room systems in your ceiling or under your floors.
LIGHTING
Huge improvements in LED lights have been made in energy-efficient lighting. Replace any recessed lights with sealed LEDs to remove gaps. Replacing older incandescent lights will save power.
VENTILATION
The good, better best approach here is:
- Install extraction fans in your kitchens, bathrooms and laundry, removing that moist air
- Install simple heat recovery ventilation units in walls, this becomes important once the house is more air-tight after draught-stopping
- For high performance, install a heat recovery ducted system that brings fresh air into the home, retaining the energy and removing stale moist air.
Heating
- Does my house meet the World Health Organisation recommendations?
"Indoor housing temperatures should be high enough to protect residents from the harmful health effects of cold. For countries with temperate or colder climates, 18 °C has been proposed as a safe and well-balanced indoor temperature to protect the health of general populations during cold seasons." [1] - Consider options to heat your whole house, not just one room at a time
Ventilation
- Do I have adequate ventilation?
- Am I trapping stale and moist air in my home making it unhealthy?
- Remove stale air with a ventilation system that maintains the energy you have invested in. These are called Heat Recovery Ventilation systems
Energy Efficient Lights
- Replace all recessed lights with energy-efficient LEDs that can be covered by insulation
- Ceiling lighting should be surface mounted - avoiding holes in your ceiling
